A LITTLE LIFE UPDATE

Today I just wanted to write a little life update (nothing major, just lots of little things!). I know I write to you guys every day but sometimes it feels like I have so many other things going on that I’ve completely neglected to share here. So this will be kind of stream of consciousness style but hopefully it fills you in on some of the things I’ve been up to lately!

design darling life update

First off, I can’t believe we only have three months until our wedding. I truly don’t know where the last seventeen months have gone and all of a sudden I find myself thinking, “Oh God, I need to trim my hair! When was the last time I had a facial? I need to amp up my workouts. Should I start running? Should I do eyelash extensions? Did we remember to order tablecloths?” 😂 I always thought people were exaggerating when they talked about the stress of wedding planning (“Oh, I’ll be more organized than they were!” HA) but clearly the joke is on me. My mind starts racing right as I get into bed and my insomnia has been pretty bad lately — I’ve even had nightmares about showing up to the church without my shoes! (What does it all mean?!) There are just so many details to keep track of! I can’t wait until we start meeting with our month of planner who will hopefully help me feel more on top of everything. I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Please stop talking about your wedding and just get married already” and honestly, #same!

Will and I have been taking weekly dance lessons and while I wouldn’t say we’re 100% confident yet, we’ve definitely improved a ton! It’s been really fun to take an hour or two a week and learn a new skill together — highly recommend whether you’re wedding planning or not. Fingers crossed we remember all our steps on the big day!

A few weekends ago, we sat down with my parents and brainstormed music and readings for the ceremony and I totally caught myself off guard by tearing up at a few of the songs! It just made everything feel so real to listen to the song that will be playing as my dad walks me down the aisle or as we leave the church as husband and wife. We still haven’t made our final choices but this was definitely one of my favorite parts of wedding planning so far.

I’m also getting so excited to spend the summer on Nantucket. My siblings and I are so lucky that my parents worked their butts off for so many years to purchase a home there and I’m just super grateful that we have such a happy place to call home on the island. I’m helping them do some redecorating (they purchased the home furnished and have hardly changed a thing in 15 years!) this summer and I think it’s going to be even more beautiful with a fresh coat of paint and a few decor updates. Ali and Patrick are moving in for the month of July so it’s going to be a good mix of work and play.

Will and I saw Billy Joel in the city last week and it was such an unbelievable concert. He just has so much energy and the crowd couldn’t get enough. We hadn’t been to a concert in a while and it was a fun reminder of how much we both love live music! Definitely something we want to do more of, especially with New York City at our fingertips.

My mom continues to be the best workout buddy and always gets me out the door when I’m not feeling it. I’ve been meaning to write a whole post on my parents’ current venture but for now suffice it to say that I don’t know how my mom manages everything she has on her plate. We’ve been doing a mix of boxing, Pilates, and weights and now she’s trying to get me into running… Let’s just say she has her work cut out for her. 😬 We’re working out at the Darien YMCA where I did gymnastics throughout my childhood (though not in the beautiful new facility) and I was so excited to go in and say hi to my former coaches (who are still there and do not seem to have aged a single day). It always makes me smile to walk into the building and think how full circle I’ve come!

Sorry for talking your ears off but it was nice to recap what’s been going on in our neck of the woods! I know you guys tend to like more personal posts like this one so I apologize if they’ve seemed few and far between of late. If you have any post ideas for me, please leave a comment below and I’ll add it to my list. And maybe tell me one thing that’s new in your world? I’d love to hear from you. xoxo

  1. Personal posts really are the best – keep them coming! Enjoy your time on Nantucket. My parent’s have a home on a lake in Northern Michigan and I would love to be able to spend the summer there.

I’m getting married in November and I totally get the stress – it’s tough to keep track of all of the little details/to dos! My mom, fiance and I met last night at our reception venue and getting together to go over everything we still need to do definitely helped me relax a bit and realize no matter what it’s going to be the perfect day because we’ll be married, and the little things won’t be remembered in the grand scheme. I’d love to see more wedding posts, but I understand if you’re keeping certain things under wraps until the big day (we’re doing the same!).

  2. Hi Mackenzie! I’m getting married in Charleston in two weeks! I’ve found lots of happy inspiration (just now searched for “clutch” inspo in your archive and ordered a wicker clutch for my bridal shower!) from your blog, and wish you all the best as a newlywed!

  3. This is so funny, I’m a bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding in October and the other night I dreamed I forgot to take my shoes with me when I went home for the wedding!!

  4. Such an exciting time. Enjoy every minute – even the crazy moments will make you laugh in years to come. If you are loving live music you should check out The Capital Thestre in Port Chester – they are always having some great live music and the venue is beautiful.

  5. Love these personal updates!

If it helps, almost everything that could have gone wrong at our wedding went wrong and it was still perfect! It’s those stories that are fun to laugh at in the moment and for years to come. So don’t sweat it.

I’m a super anxious person, but on the day of the wedding was super calm (and excited). You kind of go into a zone — a good zone!

    It’s going to be amazing!!

    1. Thank you so much, Kelly! I’m sure your wedding day looked nothing short of perfect from the outside 🙂 It’s great that you can laugh about everything now — I’m sure we will have plenty of those moments too! xoxo

  6. I’m getting married in October and OMG the wedding stress dreams are so real! I still haven’t seen my dress since I picked it out so I keep having dreams that I pick it up and hate it!! Love these posts and can especially relate right now with all of the wedding planning stuff 🙂

  7. As a fellow engaged reader, I’m also not bored of hearing about your wedding yet 🙂 Keep posting away!

  8. Stay strong through all of this wedding stuff. It can be so crazy! I used to have dreams that my dress kept falling off of me (my actual dress didn’t even need that much done…so it seems ridiculous). Finally I called the seamstress and made my appointment, even though I still had months to go before that could happen. I hope you get some sleep and don’t forget to take care of yourself. It really will all fall into place the day of!

  9. I love these personal posts! And your wedding will be just beautiful, even if you forget your shoes. One idea/question I have for a personal post is, how did your parents meet and fall in love? I love a good “how we met” story.

  10. i think you’ve done a great job balancing your wedding posts/regular content – selfishly, i’d love to see more (i’m getting married this september as well!) and miss your wedding wednesday posts!

  11. My wedding is in 11 months and I am so full of anxiety because I have 4 weddings to attend (including being an MOH) and take the CA Bar exam before my wedding! Ahhhh needing all of the wedding posts!

  12. Wedding nightmares are so real. I had them (forgot my dress, forgot my veil) and my twin sister (who got married a couple weeks ago!) had them for months. Good luck with staying sane in the home stretch of wedding planning! Now that I just hit my one year anniversary (can’t believe it!) I can say that the drudgery of planning it all has faded and the good memories from the wedding made it all worth it 🙂

    1. Joyce, so good to hear I’m not alone! I know it sounds dramatic to say I’m having wedding nightmares but I think I’m just worried I’ll drop the ball on one of the many little details! Thanks for the solidarity 🙂 And happy anniversary!

  13. Loved hearing more about this! We’re almost 4 months away from our wedding and I’m convinced that I am going to forget like my vows, rings, or even my veil!

Can’t wait to read more about your summer!

    Best,
    Ashley

  14. I’ve been loving your wedding update posts!!! I’m getting married in October…so I’m going through a lot of the same things as you are. We have a little more time before our wedding, so I’m not even close to freaking out or feeling stressed, which is making me anxious! “why am I not more worried? Am I missing something? SHOULD I BE DOING MORE?? What is there to do?? AHH!” so…freaking out about not freaking out haha…par for the course I suppose 🙂 Thanks for sharing this, it’s nice to read stuff like this on blogs!!

    1. That’s amazing that you’re not feeling stressed! If you have any tips, send them my way 😉 I’ve honestly felt that way for the last year or so and now it just feels like it’s HERE and it’s crunch time! Sending you positive vibes 🙂

  15. Good morning Mackenzie! So glad that for the most part things are going great, hopefully good nights of sleep won’t be far behind. A friend of mine and her fiancé also loved doing their dance lessons. Even though on the big day her dress kept them from really doing any of the steps they planned they said it was one of the best things to do together.

    1. Miraculously I fell asleep immediately last night (maybe because I wrote this post?!). I honestly think dance lessons would be an awesome way to meet people whether you’re practicing for your wedding or not — glad to hear your friend felt the same!
