NO WARDROBE IS COMPLETE WITHOUT THIS FALL CLASSIC

I was unpacking my bags after our honeymoon and reflecting on the pieces I splurged on before our trip that I know I’ll be wearing for years to come: this cashmere cable-knit sweater in cream and camel, these jodhpur leggings, these borderline magic leather pants. They’re my favorite kind of purchases: thoughtful (I literally went into Ralph Lauren with a list on my phone…), timeless in style, and so well-made as to be worn ten times the lifespan of less expensive lookalikes.

It got me thinking about the other pieces in my closet I consider most enduring, one of which is a camel coat from J.Crew that my mom gave me for Christmas nearly five years ago. It has a tailored silhouette, tortoiseshell buttons, and a just-right bow at the neck — classic and feminine and versatile enough to dress up a pair of jeans or to be worn over a party dress during the holidays. (Here’s a somewhat cringe-worthy outfit post from four years ago if you’d like a visual. Note to self: the coat’s a classic; the arm party, not so much.)

While I wish J.Crew would bring back this style in a rainbow of color ways, I found a number of equally timeless styles if you’re looking for a classic camel coat of your own, from the budget-friendly to the seriously splurge-worthy.

  • The low neckline isn’t ideal for a New England winter, but a good option for you Californians and Texans from Old Navy ($58).
  • A steal of a deal in a simple silhouette from J.Crew Factory ($98).
  • I love the high neck and military-esque buttons on this Eliza J coat ($198).
  • There’s nothing I don’t love about this Lauren Ralph Lauren style ($220).
  • The camel coat for girls who love a cinched waist, also by Lauren Ralph Lauren ($300).
  • This J.Crew topcoat is the perfect length ($350).
  • I always covet Club Monaco’s outerwear, and this camel coat is no exception ($459).
  • A splurge-worthy style from the king of classics, Ralph Lauren ($598).
  • The only thing I don’t like about this Rag & Bone coat is the price tag ($995, ouch).
