THIS WEEK’S ROSE AND THORN

Happy Friday! I feel like this week just flew by — maybe it’s the five hours of The Bachelor I consumed between Monday and Tuesday (I swear that show is a black hole for productivity) or maybe it was running around to get ready for our trip this weekend. Read on to find out where we’re off to this weekend!

This week’s rose is that Will and I are heading to the Dominican Republic as we speak! Neither of us has ever been and we’re excited for a couple days in the sun, especially after the snow (!) in Connecticut this week. We’re staying at a hotel that’s been on my bucket list for years and I can’t wait to Instagram every corner of it! And seeing a new country means making a little progress on my 101 in 1001 list (#3 under travel) so it’s a win-win all around.

This week’s thorn is always my least favorite part of traveling: leaving Rory behind. Thankfully my parents are able to watch him while we’re out of town (which means he gets lots of quality time with his puppy “brother” Coach) but I miss him SO much when I’m gone. I’m heading on a second beach trip next week for work and the thought of spending so many days apart makes my heart hurt. I swear I have this thing where every animal starts to remind me of Rory — literally to the point where Ali and I were swimming with dolphins a couple years ago and I asked her if it made her miss her dogs too (#normal). I don’t know what to say except I’m a crazy dog mom and I guess it could be worse… like being a crazy cat mom (kidding… kind of 😬).

What were your rose and thorn this week? Any other obsessive cockapoo moms out there?

  1. Years ago I was like that about my cat, “Bunny”. The connection I had to that animal was incredibly powerful. He brought comfort to some really lonely parts of my life. When I lived in NYC I brought him with me to dinner parties (yes I really did!) and when I moved home to Beverly Hills he came with me. When I got married and had children he was still “my boy”. Now we have dogs and fish – as well as children – and Bunny is in heaven. I still miss him so much and I still dream about him sometimes. There is nothing in this world like the love of an animal.

    1. Aw, so sweet, Elizabeth. Reminds me of a quote by Anatole France: “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

  2. I’m new to your blog. Love your style…all the way around (home, fashion, writing, travel).

I’m a crazy dog mom too and was a crazy cat mom for 19 years (my human son thinks I’m nuts). After seeing the pictures of your adorable Rory, I totally get why your heart breaks. The good news is that whether it’s five minutes or five days, they still greet us with the same amount of enthusiasm.

    Enjoy your trip!

  3. Raises hand.

I totally know what you mean. Yesterday was the first day I left Odee for more than an hour (which had only happened once before) and the event I went to had three dogs!

I thought 1) I totally should have brought her and 2) That all of the dogs reminded me of Odee. While I liked dogs before, I wasn’t a dog person per se. Now I want to start a new life where all I do is work with animals all day. And by work, I mean cuddle.

Also, we’re thinking of another trip to Italy and France and I have NO idea how to do it now that I’m a puppy mama. A crazy puppy at that. Maybe you can do a post with some tips because I SO need them.

p.s. Have a great trip! I bet Rory is having a blast with Coach.

  4. I hope you have a blast in the Dominican Republic!

What are your thoughts on Arie/Lauren’s relationship? How excited are you for Becca as Bachelorette (or were you hoping they’d go with someone else)? I adore her and really hope she finds love on the show, but I’m sick of hearing “Let’s do the damn thing!” all the time so I hope she drops the catchphrase.

  5. My husband and I took a five-week trip to Europe in the fall of 2016 and it was absolutely amazing. We had an incredible time and loved every second of it….except about once a day I would get really sad and guilty feeling and think, “I miss the animals!!” and want to cry lol. They were being cared for by our dear friends who sent us pictures showing how well they were doing, but still! It’s just a thing when you love your pets I guess!

  6. I am another obsessive cockapoo mom and I just hate leaving my sweet Hamilton. I am going to be a wreck when we do have kids, if I am this bad with our pup. Love your foyer reveal this week!

  7. We have a husky cross so can’t join the cockapoo club, but we also are reminded of our dog by almost every animal! I think it’s about posturing and expression for me. I never knew my dog (who legitimately looks like an arctic wolf) would share features with deer, birds, rabbits, diniosaurs….the list goes on!
