I was cleaning out my closet the other day and noticed that I wear a lot of blue. This will come as no shock since I'm pretty sure 90% of the things I blog about come in navy but I was surprised to see so many different blue hues and so very little pink! I realized that as a redhead I tend to stick with what I know works and steer clear of riskier palettes. Do you gravitate toward one or the other as well?

Shannon was one of the first people I reached out to when I decided to quit my job and start my business and we've emailed back and forth literally every day since. Who you are:

Hi, I’m Shannon Darrough. I write the blog I Love Your Crazy.

What you do:

I am a freelance writer and from time to time I help select companies with their social media.

Where you do it:

Let me see, I have a little office, but I enjoy the energy of a coffee shop so much that often I try to find the perfect spot in one (preferably with an outlet next to me).

Five words to describe yourself:

Preppy, loyal, energetic, enthusiastic, optimistic (most of those are just another way of saying hyper, ha!).

How would you describe your aesthetic?

As a writer I don’t have an aesthetic so much... I mean I hope I look nice on the contributors page! I suppose my writing style is whimsical and with a dash of wit.

Who are your style icons?

Jackie Kennedy, always.

When did you know it was time to make the switch to freelancing / self-employment?

One afternoon when I was starting to get frustrated, I told myself that I would pursue opportunities in teaching and writing and whatever came first would be a sign of which direction I should go with my career. That afternoon, Katie Armour from Matchbook invited me on as a contributor. From there, more pieces started falling into place and Shannon Darrough Writing and Media was born.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of starting your own company?

Finding your passion in life can be tough, making a career of it is even tougher, but the feeling of knowing you’re doing what you love is amazing.

What is one lesson you've learned the hard way?

This is so tough. Balancing work and life is my biggest lesson. When you start a company there is no time clock, overtime, or lunch break. You have to make hours for yourself and for your life — and sleep, yes, sleep.

What advice would you offer aspiring creatives?

Don’t compare yourself to others; if you are looking around at what everyone else is doing, you’re not looking where you are going. Don’t be afraid to make your own path.

What do the next few years have in store for your brand?

I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but my next step is interior design. I have been quietly helping people for some time now. My plan is to make it part of what I do every day.

My very favorite thing to do with my mom and my sister is to treat ourselves to manicures and pedicures at a nearby nail salon. There's nothing special about the salon but it always feels indulgent to spend time chatting and walk out with pretty polish on our fingers!

If you've been reading for a couple months now, you know that I quit my first job and decided to start my own business. I've been playing coy about details so I could really nail down the concept and start putting plans in motion behind the scenes. But now I'm pulling back the curtains on my new full-time gig...

...A brand new e-commerce site featuring a tightly edited assortment of accessories and decor! The past couple months have been a blur of preparations: registering Design Darling LLC, opening wholesale accounts, talking to mentors and new friends, and working on the new site. I can't wait to share the fruits of my labor with all of you!

I have lots of favorite little brick-and-mortar boutiques where I like to peruse and pick up gifts, whether apartment accessories or jewelry or paper goods. But I had yet to find the place where all those things converge online: a one-stop shop for all the lovely little details that make a house a home and an outfit a show-stopper. Imagining that many of you might feel the same, I decided to take a leap of faith and create it myself.

When Design Darling {the boutique} goes live in early March, you'll find fabulous art, baubles, clutches, pillows, trays, and more! My parents are in the midst of redoing our family room and it's been fun to help them update the look from washed out beiges and tans to preppy navy blue and white. (Perhaps I need to take a few Instagram shots to share on Twitter!) When it came time to replace the sofa, they actually found two they love from Ikea — for just $399 each! Curious, creative, spirited, passionate, loyal.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Classic with a twist. I love bold pieces and believe accessories make an outfit. Living in San Francisco and growing up in New England, I can't help but be a layering fanatic.

Who are your style icons?

Christiane Celle, Grace Kelly, Jenna Lyons, the Clarins sisters, Kelly Wearstler.

How did you decide you wanted to design jewelry?

I started designing jewelry while a student at Boston College, making pieces for myself and friends. It started off as a hobby and then, after being approached by a few small boutiques, I realized it had the potential to be a business.

What is the most glamorous aspect of your work?

Making my own schedule, and being able to travel to fun places in search of new materials & inspiration.

What is one lesson you've had to learn the hard way?

I've learned that you have to be patient with the design process. Trying to create new pieces can't be forced!

What advice would you offer aspiring creatives?

Trust your instincts! If you're passionate about something and believe in it, great things will happen.

Where would you like to see your business in five years?

I'd like to expand my line beyond jewelry into other accessories: leather goods, scarves, etc. I'm also working on a line of cufflinks that I hope will become a bigger part of the business in coming years. One day I'd love to open a shop.

Let's talk about online shopping, shall we? There are times that I fall in love with something and buy it straight away for fear that it'll sell out and I'll have missed my chance. (That's the only way these pants found their way to my closet — in two colors.) I'm usually not a big fan of zebra print but somehow I love it in blue and white. Then there's the perfect pop of reddish pink from the framed flamingos in Kirsten's powder room. I almost never blog about the color red. The reason is pretty simple: as a redhead, I try to stay far, far away. But then my friend Bailey pinned these two ensembles and got my creative juices flowing...

The Design Dialogues {Maggie Morgan}

I first connected with this week's guest through her weekly column on the business blog Makeunder My Life. Maggie quit her desk job six months ago to pursue a career as an interior designer in Seattle and writes each week about the highs and lows of self-employment. Today her blog and her business are a testament to her passion and persistence and I'm delighted to have her here to tell you all about it!

What you do:

I'm an interior decorator specializing in rooms that mix old and new and look gathered over time.

Five words to describe yourself:

Thoughtful, feminine, traditional, determined, creative.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Mixed-era simplicity with a dash of glamour. My description of it changes all the time, but I love mixing pieces from different time periods, clean lines, gorgeous fabrics, and something sparkly (like a fantastic chandelier!).

Who are your style icons?

For interiors, Windsor Smith and Billy Baldwin. For fashion, Rachel Bilson and the Duchess of Cambridge.

How did you decide you wanted to be an interior designer?

Like many decorators, I can look back at my childhood of serious dollhouse decorating and constant bedroom redesign and know that it seemed to just come naturally. But I followed several other passions during high school and college. It wasn't until a year or two out of college that I reevaluated my career and realized that something was missing. I'd been blogging about interior design for a year and was helping friends and readers with their homes. I thought, "Hey, some people get paid to do this!" That was the beginning.

What are the best and worst aspects of your job?

I love playing with fabric, but the best moments are hearing from my clients that they feel like I "got them" and that their house feels like a home. The worst aspect? Well, I'm still a very new business so it's wondering where my next client will come from! And dealing with back-orders or discontinued products.

What advice would you offer aspiring creatives?

Save up money before leaving your job so that you can truly invest all your energy into your new business without worrying about bills for at least six months to a year. Creativity is cramped when you're trying to fit it into what will make money. And get beautiful professional photos of your work or product!

Three items on your to do list.

Wrap up a mini-session for a giveaway winner, open a few trade accounts that I haven't gotten around to, and finish up my latest e-book.

Where would you like to see your business in five years?

My overall vision changes daily... but I know that I want to be doing residential design for high-end clients in the Seattle area. In five years I'd love to have a talented and dedicated small team, possibly a product line, and be published in a magazine.

Three items on your wishlist.

I asked Santa this year for a watercolor set (just to dabble!), The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman, and my favorite candle, Voluspa's Huckleberry.

She has a charming blog, a fabulous home, an adorable family, and a bustling e-commerce site. As far as I'm concerned, Sue from The Zhush is living the dream! Here she dishes advice for aspiring creatives and dreams for her budding business.

Five words to describe yourself:

Dreamer, curious, open-minded, loyal, lucky.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Traditional with a glamorous twist. Though I should probably add "fickle" to the above five words because I also love a bit of boho, 70s vibe, preppy, trendy... I guess eclectic sort of covers it all, right?

Who are your style inspirations?

Kelly Wearstler, Tory Burch, Jonathan Adler, Mary McDonald, Rachel Zoe, vintage Ali Macgraw, and Mary Tyler Moore. I also love to pop into New York City and soak it up — the people watching, the window gazing... now that is some serious style inspiration right there!

How did you decide to launch an e-commerce site?

My affinity for "zhushing" with both home decor and fashion accessories had me looking for another outlet outside of the blog. After briefly researching leases for nearby store space and getting a dose of reality over the cost, I decided getting my feet wet online with less overhead would be a good way to start up a shop and see how it went.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your work?

Getting great feedback from customers in emails, tweets, and photos or seeing the shop mentioned on blogs and in magazines seriously makes my day, sometimes my whole week! I also love to source great new products to add to the store.

What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs?

Don't spend too much time worrying about all the "what ifs" because those can stifle you. Make like the Nike slogan and "just do it!" The "what ifs" may or may not pan out, but you'll never know if don't just jump on in. In other words, don't over think it. Starting something new can seem so daunting and intimidating; ask yourself simply, "What do I need to get started?" Later you can break everything down into smaller tasks. Once you actually get started you can always ask yourself, "What's next?" and grow things from there.

Where would you like your business to be in five years?

Ideally, I would love to have my own line of accessories and carry some of my own items — maybe even some of my own artwork — and possibly in a brick and mortar store as well.

Oh heck, why not dream big...several brick and mortar stores!

Weathering Winter

We're fast approaching that time of year when the weather outside is prohibitively cold. I'm embarrassed to admit that I literally decide whether to go out and run an errand based on how freezing I will be between my front door and my car... And it's only bound to get worse as winter progresses. Fortunately I found a little ice cold inspiration in this ensemble over on my very favorite style blog, Atlantic-Pacific:

Blair has a knack for mixing colors and patterns that I think goes unrivaled among personal style bloggers. I'm constantly wishing I could come up with the looks she does, which is why I thought we might all use a little lesson from one of her recent outfits. Easy Canvas Prints

Before I launch into sharing holiday gift guides — and there will be plenty! — I thought I'd share a lovely gift I received recently. Thanks to the generous folks at Easy Canvas Prints, I converted one of my favorite family photographs into an 11" x 14" canvas!

I was impressed at how quickly I received my order and the quality of the print itself. My canvas cost $46 and smaller options start at just $29 (well within the gifting range, wink wink!). My New Favorite Toy

Thanks to all of you who shared your favorites on this post, I have found the curling iron of my dreams. Following your recommendations, I immediately ordered the Hot Tools curling iron (1 1/4" size) and subsequently fell in love.

It heats up almost immediately, works quickly, and costs a mere $34. Seriously?! The hair tool of my dreams cost just $34?! I wish someone had told me ages ago. Get yours here and watch this tutorial if you need a little help refining your technique.

And because you were all so helpful with my last beauty dilemma, here's another for you. Do any of you use Clarisonic to clean and exfoliate? I've heard rave reviews but the $119 price tag is a bit steep for my liking. If you've used it, I would love to hear your thoughts!

My family and I are off to Rhode Island to celebrate with extended family and I've been given the task of delivering the toast! I'm quite a bit nervous but looking forward to catching up with everyone and indulging in a little apple pie :) What are you all up to?

Step out in sequins! The ASOS gold strapless dress ($89) will guarantee all eyes on you. The ASOS sequin skater dress ($62) is my personal pick — my favorite color, a flattering shape, and just the right amount of sparkle!
