Yet another J.Crew love letter 😉 I usually order online but my mom and I swung by their J.Crew Collection store on the Upper East Side a couple weeks ago and I’m so glad we did! I absolutely fell in love with this scalloped dress but sadly it was too big/long even in the smallest size (gotta love vanity sizing!). Thankfully one of the sales associates (and one of the chicest older women I’ve ever seen) was an expert tailor and suggested adding a seam just above the hem since I won’t be wearing it in an office and prefer shorter hemlines on my 5’1″ frame. I instagrammed the end result, a perfectly 60s-esque shift that I’ll be living in all spring and summer. It’s now sold out online but I highly recommend calling and trying to track one down… I’m obsessed!

P.S. Obviously snatched up the striped shorts as well. Both are killer with these navy pumps!

Keep up with Design Darling

  1. Hey! I love how the dress was tailored! I recently just bought the dress in bright poppy. I love it, but I am also on the short side (5′ 3″), and am interested in getting it hemmed like yours! I go to school in new york, and i’ve been to the j crew on the upper east side. Did you get it hemmed at the store, or somewhere else? Do you mind telling me where!? Thanks!!

  2. I tried this dress on in the store last week and it fit me weird too! They were also out of 00 so that might have been the problem too. Good for you for getting it and taking it to be tailored! I can’t think of a more “Mackenzie” dress.

  3. I am in loooove with the scallop dress…this is one of my favorite looks for spring. Also loving the Kiel James Patrick scalloped oxford and the JCrew scalloped skirt (and the kate spade scalloped flats!)

  4. i ordered it! i ordered the 00 and the 2 petite since i needed the 0 petite and it sold out too fast! neither fit perfectly so i’m on the wait list for the size i need. otherwise, i will be tailoring one!

  5. I tried that dress on when it first came out in stores and fell in love with it. Normally a 2, I went with a size 0 and it fit perfectly, so I can only imagine that it was a little long on you!

  6. I have (and LOVE) that dress- I’m planning on wearing it to my university graduation next month. I had a similar problem, but my tailor was able to take it up in the shoulders so we didn’t have to ruin the hem. It’s such a gorgeous dress!

  7. That dress is absolutely going to be perfect to wear all summer long! So cute. I wish I lived closer to a J.Crew — I have such a hard time buying things online without being able to try them on!

  8. Such a great idea with that dress! I tried it on too and it was similarly big on me, much to my disappointment. You’re so lucky to have found someone who could fix the problem without sacrificing the style of the dress!

  9. Eek! There’s nothing more challenging than being petite and fashionable….I’m 4’11 and nothing fits off the rack. Love that solution though. And that gorgeous dress obvvs

  10. I bought that dress in the bright coral color a few weeks ago! I’m 5’9 so it was plenty short enough for me already! I love those striped shorts too!
