I love a sharp pair of heels as much as the next girl, but sometimes my feet just need a break. When it comes to pretty, preppy shoes for women, there are so many timeless styles from which to choose and no need to sacrifice style to maintain comfort. I’m really trying to invest in wardrobe staples (and resist impulse purchases) and everyday flats feel like the perfect place to start. Cheap shoes never last and never fit as well as the real deal. So I decided to round up 10 styles that will never go out of style; in fact, you’ve probably seen at least a few of them in your mother or grandmother’s closet. From simple ballet flats to embroidered smoking slippers, here’s my list of 10 classic flats every woman should own.
Pictured above: #8, #7, and #5.
1. Chloé scalloped ballet flats ($475, similar for $250)
2. J.Crew ballet slippers ($150)
3. J.Crew metallic loafers ($158)
4. Jimmy Choo Alina pointy toe flats ($550, similar for $138)
5. Salvatorre Ferragamo Varina leather bow flats ($495)
6. Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes ($88)
7. Stubbs & Wootton embroidered slippers ($450, similar for $195)
8. Tod’s driving mocs ($425)
9. Tory Burch Reva flats ($225)
10. Vince perforated d’Orsay flats ($350)
How many of these pairs do you already own? Which one is next on your wishlist? (I can’t decide between these and these!) Any other brands or styles you’d add to the list?
Great list of “must have” flats with a great variety of styles and designers. I should broaden my collection with different designer flats but I’m 100% addicted to Tory Burch flats. Her Revas of course but also her Carolines, Eddies, Lowell and Minnie travels. I have a pretty large collection of Tory’s. If you’re interested, you can view my collection here; https://davisbe.wordpress.com/2014/08/25/my-world-is-flats/
Great post, thanks for sharing

Ack! I can’t come close to affording most of these… Have you considered doing a …for less post? 🙂
What a fun list! My late to the party add is Tod’s Gommino driving mocs should be worn for special occasions, as they don’t have a traditional sole. Pavement and cobblestones eat them up quickly; the rubber tread wears down and the leather scratches. And sadly, they are not repairable. Tod’s offers a new City Gommino with a full rubber sole as a more durable option, but it’s not as cute. I may be dating myself here, but the first luxury flat I craved and saved for, was Chanel. I even bought them for my daughter when she was a teenager and she still has them. Classic.
I have Top Siders and Revas. WANT the Tod’s.
I’ve been wanting a cheeky pair of loafers for a long time! Like the “you are my sunshine” ones or something…

Love the Ferragamo”s!!

It’s funny. I probably own WAY too many pairs of flats. I literally own them in every color. I’m actually trying to buy more heels as a result.

I love flats, probably more so than heels. I always tell people I look like a newborn calf when I walk in heels. Anyway, this post is right up my alley! I own Sperrys and Tory Burch Reva flats, and I’d like to own a few more pairs of Revas for sure. I will say that my most comfortable pair of flats are by Sam Edelman. Check them out if you haven’t already.

I have the Tod loafers (highly recommend), Chloe flats, and Jimmy Choo Atilla flats (a little different than the ones you’ve posted, but still a pointed toe flat). I’d also add a pair of Porselli or Repetto ballet flats to the list (Porsellis are my fav). The Gianvito Rossi pointed-toe ankle strap flats are definitely on my wishlist right now. I love them!
Can I come raid your shoe closet?! 😉 Thanks for the tips — checking out Porselli now!
I live in my Sperry topsiders when it’s too cool for flip-flops, but I think I need to add those Ferragamo leather bow flats to my collection!
Such a lovely post

I can definitely vouch for the J. Crew, Tory Burch, and Ferragamo flats- all worth the price!
I would definitely go with the Tod’s over the other pair.
Really great post- thanks for the style inspiration!!
Thanks for weighing in — much appreciated! 🙂
I have been lusting over the Ferragamo bow flats and Tod’s driving mocs for years! I even bought a similar pair of driving mocs a few years ago and wore them until they literally fell apart at the seams. I vote you get the navy driving mocs!
Love the Varina! So beautiful! xo Ash
The Yellow Petunia
I couldn’t agree more!
Definitely a fan of my Tod’s driving shoes! I love my D’orsays too!!!
Love love love the Tod’s! Think they might be next on my list.
I haven’t had the best luck with TB flats so I think my next pair of flats will be Tieks! I’ve heard great things about how comfortable they are and the quality is amazing!
You will love Tieks! 🙂
Gorgeous collection of flats!! My fav are the ferragamo!!

Ahh each one of these is just too cute!! I love love love #5!!!

I find Nine West makes a comfortable flat at a great price point. I just read about a french women rule of wearing flats with dresses above the knee and heels with dresses below the knee. I’m going to try that out this Spring, I’m off to flat shop! xx http://www.celebratingthislife.ca
LOVE THIS COLLECTION!!

I finally admitted to myself last year that I really dislike heels. I hate that I have to plan my whole life around them! If I wear them out to dinner I have to tell my boyfriend I can’t walk home in them. Or I leave a fun event early because I can’t take it anymore. So I stopped pretending that I will wear heels (even being only 5 ft tall) and started buying pretty flats.
Between living in Boston (hello walking, public transit, and rain/snow/slush) and working in events, flats are SO MUCH more practical and usually a little less pricey than their loftier counterparts.
Some of my faves include my blue suede d’orsays from Madewell and my tan leather Fulton flats from Michael Kors (so comfy!). Thanks for posting the fun new options!
I love those SF bow flats! Absolutely beautiful!

I have two pairs of the Varinas and LOVE them! So versatile and comfortable! Seriously lusting for a pair of Tod’s and the Jimmy Choo’s!
So good to know! Time for me to invest in a pair… 🙂
I live in flats. They’re perfect for walking to work in. I really love the Tod’s driving mocs you have pictured. Timeless as you mentioned!
PS I think your link for the Chloe scalloped flats is incorrect, when I click on it I’m brought to Jimmy Choo Alina pointy toe flats instead, just a heads up! (:
