You’ve probably noticed that my personal style consists primarily of classic pieces and colors and silhouettes I feel comfortable in. I’m not much of a risk taker in that regard — I know what I like and what makes me feel good. So when I spot an item of clothing that makes this much of a statement, I’m usually content to admire it from afar on Instagram or on other blogs. But when my friend Katie (of the brilliant clothing and furniture line Katie Kime) sent me this otomi maxi skirt from her fall collection, I couldn’t help but fall in love.

The fitted waist satisfies my love of fit-and-flare styles and the otomi print is a bold update on my love of all things blue and white. I tried it on in at the office and everyone agreed it’s the kind of piece you’d wear if you were hosting Christmas dinner or being photographed for House Beautiful (both life goals of mine for sure!) — an item that will have all eyes on you. So while my love of all things classic and preppy persists, I get a little giddy thinking about having this more unexpected piece hanging in my closet.

Um, is it wrong to plan a party around a skirt?!

P.S. If you like this style, you have to check out the banana leaf print too. So chic!

  1. cute!
Is it possible to find out what the pattern was that you used to make the skirt with?

  2. i am obsessed with this look on you. Glam hostess/House Beautiful feature is right! The wide waist band and long length are doing all the right things on you. So flattering and chic!

I’d love to see it paired with a tee shirt or tight tank top as well, maybe with a chunky necklace? I think it’d look super glam with a tight white longsleeve tee shirt and some major earrings. Or a crop top. Lauren Santo Domingo always look fantastic when she pairs glam skirts with unexpected tops, and this reminds me of something she’d wear.

I love the mix of casual top with fun, huge skirt. I wore an Alexandra Grecco navy tutu with a plain navy tank top and gold high heel sandals to my courthouse wedding and felt fun, chic, and happy. I’m wearing the same skirt with a navy long sleeve crop top to a New Years party later this month. Similar silhouette of wide waistband and big skirt.
