There aren’t many items that my 16-year-old self coveted that I still find myself admiring a decade later, but one of the few was a straw basket bag that my mom carried during the summer. She was working for Coach at the time and their entire catalog was full of summery straw bags like hers (this was their pre-logo-on-everything and pre-pre-returning to the classics phase). I loved her bag so much that she surprised me with my own version, a straw satchel with a turquoise canvas top and white leather trim. I still have it in my closet and it’s truly the only bag I own from the time she worked there that I would still carry today!
There’s something about a straw bag — whether it’s a casual clutch or an oversized basket tote — that exudes effortless chic like few other accessories can. I find myself adding one or two to my collection each year and it’s nice to own pieces that not only remind me of my mom but also see daily use each summer. And if I can pay homage to the timeless basket-toting Jane Birkin’s summer uniform, all the better. Here are a few of the straw bags I’ve spotted for this season…
I suppose it’s worth noting that I’m using the word straw rather liberally to include bags made of rattan and wicker as well. This box bag is a new addition to my list of dream bags but this and this are more realistic purchases for me this summer. And if you’re looking for something monogrammed (duh), I suggest checking out this shop. Which straw bag is your favorite?
