FLORAL ARRANGING FUN

design darling flower arranging

Last week my mom and I decided to take advantage of the warm weather with a little flower arranging in my parents’ backyard. We went to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods and bought a ton of daisies, hyacinth, hydrangeas, lilies, peonies, and ranunculus and then set up a little cutting station on their patio. It reminded me of my first summer job in a flower shop on Nantucket when I was 16 and was so nice to completely unplug and do something creative and relaxing. We’ve had the most gorgeous blooms in our house for the past few days — I’m not sure there’s anything better than a house full of fresh flowers!

One of my favorite floral arranging tips is to use hydrangea leaves to line the inside of a vase. We did this with the floral arrangements at our wedding and it just gives everything a nice finished look!

You can see the result on the right! We learned when we were picking out our wedding flowers that I’m drawn to “monobotanical” arrangements whereas my mom has a knack for combining different flowers like daffodils, daisies, and hydrangeas. I did go outside my comfort zone with the arrangement on the left and I love how colorful and springy it looks!

Angie, one of the ABC students my parents are taking care of, came out to help with the arrangements. She’s heading to prom next week in the dress I wore to our rehearsal dinner — it looks incredible on her!

Pink peonies always remind me of my childhood because my dad planted a ton of peony bushes along one side of our yard growing up. He would always cut them and bring them in for my mom, leaving a little arrangement at the kitchen sink, one on her bedside table, etc. They make me so happy!

Sneak peek! You may remember from the progress photos of our living room that we had a really ill-fitting side table next to our sectional so I went ahead and ordered this one and the look and dimensions are just perfect for this little nook! I styled it with a stack of coffee table books and an oversized Diptyque candle that makes this room smell like heaven on earth. The lamp was a dark wood piece that Will had when we moved in together in Dallas — I loved the height and shape so I painted it white and gave it a navy lampshade for a new lease on life!
