I’m currently on the hunt for a new tote bag that I can throw over my shoulder as a carry-on bag for travel and a way to carry my laptop on days I venture to a coffee shop or library to get out of the house. This is my current everyday bag and I absolutely adore it, but the bamboo handles aren’t super comfortable when I’m schlepping my camera and laptop through the airport. (It may have come with a detachable strap to make it hands-free but if so I’ve long since misplaced it!) Here are a few of the options I’m considering but I would love to hear if any of you have an everyday tote bag you’re obsessed with. Please let me know in the comments!

  1. Mackenzie, I would totally recommend Etsy for purses. Plus, I love that there’s an option to customize so you’ll have something no one else owns. I bought myself this leather hobo from a Polish shop as a birthday gift and it was less than $100!

    Another favorite:

  2. I have the Annabel Ingall tote in red and I love it. It holds so much and looks both super chic and classic. I’ve seriously considered purchasing another color.

  3. I love my Cuyana tote! I have the suede one. It’s been on a boat, shoved under airplane seats, out in the snow, and it still looks brand new. It holds a ton. I do recommend getting the organizer insert as well, it really provides some structure to the bag.

  4. I own #7 (Cuyana) and love it…has held up very nicely…good quality leather…I also own #9 (Mark & Graham)..and you won’t be able to toss over your shoulder as the handles are too short (I do still like)

  5. I have the Saint Laurent tote- and I loveeee it. My husband got it for me in Paris on our honeymoon as a wedding gift! I use it as my work bag (holds MacBook and camera nicely) and throw a small crossbody inside as my “wallet” or just to grab when I have a quick errand to run.

I also highly recommend the Madewell transport tote- much better as a carry-on because it’s bigger and It holds up to travel wear and tear better., (I think it starts looking cooler when it’s got a little character)

  6. Firstly, I adore you and your blog ! While older, I can totally relate – I have vacationed at the Cape and Nantucket since I was two and my husband proposed at Chatham Bars ! To answer your question, I LOVE the YSL shopper. I commute to the city each day from central NJ and it is the perfect bag – sturdy, yet soft leather !
    Hope this helps !
PS – I just purchased the Celine sunglasses ! So excited !

    Best regards,

  7. I own #8 and use it as my everyday work bag in navy! I bought it as a Law School grad gift to myself and I love it and it fits my laptop and everything else well! I actually want it in more colors! Would recommend!!

  8. My absolute favorite for a carry-on bag for travel is my MZ Wallace medium metro tote. I love that the quilted nylon is super lightweight, but still roomy enough to fit everything. I have one in platinum (or some other neutral metallic shade) and I simply love it.

    This color-blocked one is cute:

  9. I have the Tory Burch tote (#8) and it was beautiful for six months. Then in the span of about two weeks it just dissolved into a pile of leather and threads. I also vote for the Everlane Market Tote, it’s reasonable priced, it’s held up well, and it stands up (which is important to me).

  10. I have #7 the cuyana tote and while it is amazing and holds a ton, it is also so heavy on its own because its high quality leather. Its beautiful and perfect for days when you really aren’t loading it up or carrying it for a while.

  11. I have two Annabel Ingall items that I’ve had now for over a year and they are both wearing and holding up fantastically! Great to see you supporting Aussie designers!!

  12. Absolutely adore my Clare V. Simple Tote! A roomy bag with a beautiful design. Plus you’re putting money back into a business headed by a fellow female entrepreneur who regularly donates to worthy causes (Planned Parenthood and Every Mother Counts). What is not to love!?

  13. I love my Duluth Lifetime Leather Tote. Duluth is a bit more of a “western” brand, but I have the bag in black and it is beautiful. I love that it has a zipper, is real leather, has side pockets, and only gets better with age. Plus, their customer service is the best.

  14. I have the Cuyana tote (seven on your list) and love it! I have had it for 4 years and it has stood the test of time. I also recently received the Everlane Day Market Tote ( and love that, too. Both can easily fit a laptop and everything else you need and fit very comfortably over the shoulder! The Everlane tote is a little more structured on the bottom, it will stand up on it’s own when set on a table or on the ground whereas the Cuyana is a little bit softer and more floppy.

  15. I bought number 12 for my Mom last year for her birthday. It’s a lovely purse, but there’s not a lot of structure to it. So if you’re planning to put anything like your laptop or a notebook in it, you may have trouble when you set it down. I also found that it is wider than it is deep, if it means anything for you.

  16. I have two cuyana totes and am looking to buy a third and I have gotten ALL of my friends hooked on it as well! highly, highly recommend! I have the classic and the zippered and I prefer the classic, but the structured will be my next one!

  17. I have twelve in brown! I’ve had it for about 2 years and honestly it hasn’t worn that well. I’ve taken it on 20 job interviews this winter (I’m interviewing for medical residency) and it’s done the job, but it definitely doesn’t look it’s best anymore. I would recommend something with a little more structure. I am hard on my things, for sure, but it would be nice if still looked as professional as it did when I first bought it.
