OUR MUDROOM AND LAUNDRY ROOM REVEAL

On the heels of last week’s kitchen reveal, today I’m going to share our mudroom and laundry room! The mudroom was an addition we did to connect our house to the previously detached garage and previously unfinished loft in which my parents are now living. We decided about halfway through the renovation to add a laundry room down here so my parents would have their own washer and dryer rather than going downstairs from their loft and using the main staircase up to our second floor to do their laundry every week. I tried to tie both spaces together with a similar color palette and I’m really happy with how each of them turned out!

MUDROOM BUILT-INS: I dreamt up the mudroom built-ins by combining a number of different inspiration images I’d saved over the years (one of which you can see in this post) and asking our builder to replicate aspects of each design I loved most. It took a couple iterations to land on the ultimate design with these light fixtures and the board and batten, but the end result is even better than I’d imagined! I know this area will become a busy part of our home and very helpful storage space as Teddy gets older and we have more children and more sports equipment, etc. and it makes me happy that it’s as pretty as it will be practical! The built-ins are painted Behr’s Ultra Pure White in high gloss and the walls are the same color in the satin finish. This is a true white (not too warm, not too cool) that I’ve used throughout our home and continue to be happy with!

LIGHTING: These sconces are the focal point of the mudroom built-ins and they are absolutely stunning in person. They’re from Hudson Valley Lighting’s collection with Mark D. Sikes and they come in so many beautiful color/finish combinations. I probably could have gotten away with three sconces instead of one over every cubby (beginner’s mistake!) but I could not recommend this light fixture more highly. I also love the pendant version!

BASKETS: I envisioned the mudroom built-ins with open cubbies at the top and bottom knowing we would add baskets at the top for doggie bags and winter accessories and leave the bottom cubbies open for shoe storage. I tried several different brands and sizes and these baskets in the medium size wound up working best with our dimensions.

HOOKS: I knew I wanted a large double hook for all the coats that will piled in here as we approach winter in New England and these hooks in the polished nickel worked out perfectly.

BENCH CUSHION: I had two custom bench cushions made through this Etsy shop — I love that they’re Sunbrella so even though they’re white, they’ll stand up to daily use.

CONSOLE TABLE: Because we added a second front door from the mudroom and because our actual foyer is more like a narrow hallway/stairwell, I wanted to add a console table in here as a place to corral keys, sunglasses, face masks, etc. This Oomph Newport console table has been on my wishlist for years and like everything Oomph makes, the quality does not disappoint. The lacquer finish is a dream and the hinting blue color complements the sconces beautifully! The photo above is the view from the playroom (with the built-ins off to the left) but because we lined up all the wide doorways when we did the addition, it’s also what you see looking out from the living room and dining room as well. I accessorized with this Ballard Designs mirror (would be amazing in a powder room as well), this table lamp, and this basket (in the tall size) that we use for pool towels since there’s a door to our backyard off to the right.

LAUNDRY ROOM DOORS: I fell in love with the idea of partial glass double doors after seeing them on the pantry in this home tour and our builder was able to custom order them through our local Ring’s End. We also ordered these doorknobs through Ring’s End — ours have a polished nickel rosette but a white porcelain doorknob to tie the newer parts of our home to the original.

LAUNDRY ROOM CABINETS: Our builder did custom cabinetry surrounding the washer/dryer to maximize our storage for cleaning and laundry supplies. The tall cabinet on the left has a wall outlet to charge my beloved cordless vacuum and it’s one of the little details that makes me happiest in our entire renovation! The paint color on the cabinets is Sherwin Williams Crystal Stream but it’s a little more saturated than I would ideally have liked — if I were to do it over I would have it cut with white paint to make the color a little more pale.

MAP WALLPAPER: This Ralph Lauren map wallpaper makes me so happy every time I walk in the mudroom door. The color on their website is weirdly yellow but it’s much more cream in person. (But as I’d recommend with all wallpaper, order a sample first to make sure you love it!)

WASHER/DRYER: We read a ton of reviews before deciding on this LG front load washer and dryer. I absolutely love the look of them and would love to replace our old washer/dryer upstairs with these at some point.

GLASS CANISTERS: I had a couple people ask me on Instagram about concealing the shut off valve that’s now required in new laundry rooms and I couldn’t come up with a better solution than wallpapering around the white box and placing two huge glass canisters for detergent pods and dryer sheets in front. This water hyacinth tray has lived everywhere from my desk to our coffee table but I like that it adds a little warmth in this otherwise utilitarian space.
