I’m excited to share photos of our home office with you today! I’ve shared sneak peeks of the space here and here, but this is where my husband Will has worked every day since March of last year and it’s been such a silver lining of the pandemic that he’s no longer commuting into the city every day. We really didn’t buy many new pieces for this room but it happened to be one of the first rooms that we wallpapered after we moved in (this grasscloth has incredible texture — I loved it so much we did the backs of the bookshelves as well!) and I’m really glad it came together quickly as it’s served as a background on many, many Zoom calls in the past year and a half. The floor-t0-ceiling bookshelves were one of the details we loved most about the house when we first walked through and Will’s ever-growing collection fills them perfectly! I’ll share a little before and after at the end of the post. 🙂

Longtime readers may remember this leather chesterfield sofa from Will’s apartment that I helped redecorate seven years back (it’s actually so fun to see how many pieces from that apartment we still have and love today!). It’s honestly pretty beat up at this point, but it’s also one of those pieces that just gets comfier the older it is so I don’t think we’ll be parting with it anytime soon. We recovered the leather cushions in this camel tattersal since those were in the worst shape and I like that it lightens things up a bit. The wingback chair was one of several vintage pieces Will already owned when we met and we had it reupholstered in a brown mohair with brass nailheads.

I had originally planned to make a white desk work in here, but I’m glad we ultimately went with a wood piece for a more masculine vibe (and the white desk wound up in my brother Camden’s apartment in the city so it all worked out!). We found this desk for $150 at Remix Market in Stamford and it was the perfect fit for this wall. The leather desk chair is from Amazon (we added this affordable jute rug so it wouldn’t scratch the floors), the brass lamps are Visual Comfort, and the prints are photos from our honeymoon safari in burl wood frames (we sell the prints here, here, here, and here and are always happy to help select alternative frames!).

More vintage art pieces (Vanity Fair prints, Texas bluebonnet oil paintings, a watercolor by my great-grandfather) are hung on the walls and tucked into the bookshelves, which already had these brass swing arm sconces when we moved in (these are super similar for a great price!). It’s a wall I’ll probably always be rearranging and tinkering with (especially as a new book seems to arrive every other day around here…) but it’s a pretty thing to see when you walk in our front door and peek into the office!

And because you know I live for a good before and after, here are two photos taken from the same spot, one from the day we moved in and the next a shot of the room in its current state!

  1. Hallo! I love these design posts. You have a beautiful, classic but fresh style, and in these posts you dive into detail which I appreciate. I would love to know the small details, too – for example, did you use the same grasscloth on the built-ins (minus trim, of course). Also, what size rug did you select for the room, and how did you decide on the size? I find it difficult to decide on a non-custom rug size for a room, in particular when you have to accommodate a desk chair, like here. It sounds like you intend more design posts in the new year and I’d love if you devote some of your posts to your thought process on these “smaller” details, as you have a great eye for them and in my opinion collected together they make a big impact on a room. Thanks!

  2. I love this room! Thank you for sharing. Out of curiosity, do you still have your Slim Aarons prints? I remember you used to have quite a few, but I feel like I haven’t seen them in the new house!

    1. Thanks and yes we do! We have one in our guest bedroom and need to find a home for others (currently have more of our own Nantucket Print Shop photos where I would otherwise have put those prints!).

  3. Beautiful! Would you mind sharing where the end table is from? Love the idea of an end table with built-in storage for books. Thank you!

  4. Just LOVE it! Totally non-decor question but can I ask what you did with the floorboard radiators? I notice the Chesterfield is now in front of where the radiator was/is!

  5. Looks gorgeous! Can you share where the shades are from on the windows? Looking for some cordless options with a baby in the house.
