KENT FALLS DAY TRIP

This past weekend we took a mini road trip up to the Kent Falls in Litchfield County, Connecticut, area for a little fall adventure. I’d been itching to shake up our weekends a bit and a 90 minute drive felt like about the most we could manage with a two-year-old and a six-month-old in order to still make it back in time for the two-year-old’s afternoon nap. It wound up being such a fun day that every single one of us needed a little cat nap when we got home — success! 🙂

We left our house around 8 a.m. and drove about an hour and twenty minutes from our house to the Warren General Store in Warren, Connecticut, for breakfast sandwiches and a blueberry muffin for Teddy. We were going to drive straight to Kent Falls but spotted signs for the Cornwall covered bridge and decided to head there and eat our breakfast on a bench overlooking the water.

From there it was about ten minutes to Kent Falls, which was a perfect spot to take in the changing leaves and climb the stone steps to the top of the waterfall. It was actually a relatively easy climb with two little ones — my dad held Teddy’s hand as he climbed the steps himself and Will wore Peter in this carrier. It’s a very easy “hike” where you’re climbing alongside the main attraction the entire time as opposed to waiting for a big view at the end — highly recommend as a fun (and not overwhelming) fall outing if you have little ones in tow!

After making our descent, we headed into Kent for an early lunch at Swyft. We’d all gotten pretty warm during the climb so we decided to eat outside (a real treat in late October!) and had some of the best pizza I’ve had in Connecticut. So good! There were so many antiques shops and art galleries in the area that I would have loved to explore, but we were determined not to spoil Teddy’s nap so we made a quick stop at Wilson’s for iced coffee and then got on the road. I’ve been missing travel after spending so much time at home these past couple years and this was a great reminder that we can still plan adventures with kids without going too far from home. Would love to hear what New England outings you’ve done with your little ones, especially as we head into winter!
