DEAR GRANDY

dear grandy

Dear Grandy,

How do you say goodbye to one of the great loves of your life? To the woman who introduced me to so many more of my big loves — Nantucket, needlepoint, Christmas mornings surrounded by cousins and siblings and the best kind of chaos?

There is so much I have you to thank for. Thank you for making it cool to have a signature style. Thank you for imparting your love of outdoor showers and the necessity of slipping out of the chapel after communion in time to secure blueberry muffins from ‘Sconset Market. Thank you for teaching me to needlepoint — what a profound gift to inherit a hobby that will always make me feel connected to you, no matter how far I fall short of your expertise. Thank you for your generous spirit, your open heart, your willingness to say yes to dog sledding at 78 or learning to use a computer in your mid-eighties. My heart aches at the thought of birthdays and anniversaries without your early bird email wishes.

Grandy, as far as grandparents go, you were one in a billion. And I’ll forever and always be lucky you were mine.

Love,
Kenzie

P.S. Will always treasure this interview with Grandy at 91.
