OUR NEW FAMILY ROOM RUG

Pardon the back-to-back posts about rugs but with a crawling baby, finding rugs has become my top decorating priority! Last week I talked about our new living room rug and today I snapped a few photos of our new family room rug. We walk through our living room every day because it’s between the kitchen and the mudroom/garage, but we spend more time as a family in the family room because it’s open to our kitchen. I posted a photo of Teddy in our family room on my Instagram story a couple nights ago and got a few questions about this rug so wanted to share a few thoughts!

We needed a custom size rug for this room because it’s 17 feet wide but there’s not a ton of space between the family room fireplace and the kitchen island, and I couldn’t find anything non-custom that was as long but also as narrow as we needed. I had bookmarked Williams-Sonoma Home’s custom jute rugs years ago and finally decided to splurge on the Sirena Concha sisal rug with the leather border. (If you don’t need a custom size and don’t care as much about the border, you can get the exact same pattern for much less here or here!) I absolutely love the look of it in person (both the pattern and the leather border) but I want to be totally honest and say that I think we’re going to have a much harder time keeping this clean long-term than we will with the rug in our living room, which is a flat weave that’s easier to spot treat. In retrospect I probably should have ordered this custom rug for our living room and the more practical flat weave option for our family room. Again I am so happy with the way it looks now, but it’s just something I feel like I should mention if you have kids or pets!

This room is far from finished but it’s more than comfortable enough for now and I’m happy to be ticking another goal off my 101 in 1001 list! The next project at some point down the road will be deciding on a fabric to reupholster a bright orange armchair and ottoman that found their way here from my parents’ house. I’m thinking something with a little green or tan to break up all the blue? Any fabric ideas welcome even if it will be a while until that makes it to the top of the to do list!
