OUR HOME OFFICE REVEAL

Up until about a month ago, our home office was hands down the most disastrous room in our house. I had long since resigned myself to working from the dining table or kitchen counter because the clutter had gotten so out of hand, but Will and I decided that the new year was the perfect time to get our home office in working order. You may have heard other bloggers use the word “cloffice” to describe a space that functions as both a closet and an office and this room definitely does double duty to address our storage needs. I’m so happy with how it turned out!

We turned to The Home Depot for a number of storage solutions in this space, starting with this closet system wall unit that has both hanging rods and shelving. (I actually love going to the store but they’re now offering free shipping on online orders over $45!) I’ve been using it to store handbags and plan out outfits for upcoming trips — it’s so nice to have a dedicated space for that that isn’t in our bedroom. I know not everyone has a spare wall for extra clothing and accessories storage, but what’s great about this unit is that you can actually adjust the width to fit within a regular closet.

The next storage solution is this file cabinet, also from The Home Depot. My husband could live happily ever after surrounded by mountains of papers but it drives me crazy. Giving him a designated piece of furniture to house and sort all his papers means better organization for him and out of sight, out of mind for me. Win-win! I think my next project will be to swap out the white knobs for fun hardware like these or these.

I have to take a second to rave about this jute rug — it was well under $200 for the 8′ x 10′ size and the quality is fantastic. I was a little nervous about the texture but it’s soft enough to walk on in bare feet and you can’t tell the difference between this and some of the more expensive rugs in our house. Fun fact: the walls and floors in this room are crazy crooked (our house was built in 1883 and for some reason it really shows its age in here!) and the rug really helps anchor the furniture, both visually and literally.

The oversized desks (which are actually dining tables) came from my office/warehouse when we lived in Dallas and it seemed silly to replace two perfectly good work surfaces with two new desks. We rearranged the furniture until we could fit both of them in this small room and Will has three monitors on his desk so the generous size actually works pretty well for us for now!

One last little detail is this clear fillable lamp, which I filled with seashells from Nantucket and Naples. I’ve been collecting shells for years and years without any proper way to display them, so getting to look at my collection while I work makes me so happy!
